Peter in prison! What a jolt!

We are too far removed from the actual scene to catch the atmosphere of dismay the Christians of that day felt.
Peter had moved from Pentecost to prison, from jeers to spears. He was guarded by sixteen soldiers. One wonders why such a defenseless man needed such a group to watch him. Could it be that Herod feared the supernatural, seeing he knew that Jesus escaped such a group that guarded Him?

Had Peter been hedged in by sixteen hundred soldiers, the problem would not have been increased nor the escape less sure. Peter was bound not only by two chains, but also by the thick walls of the prison, by the three wards of the prison, and finally by an iron gate.

It Is Finished

‘It is finished’ and He bowed His head and gave up the ghost.”

I said last week that I’d attempt to talk to you on the three most important words, I believe, in history - IT IS FINISHED. This is one of the seven sayings, as we say, of the Lord Jesus on the cross. Just three words - IT IS FINISHED.

In these three words I see the consummation of all the Old Testament truth and the germination of all New Testament truth. I don’t believe that ever in history, anywhere, at any time, by anybody, were three words more pregnant with meaning than these three words given by one Man at the end of His life - It is finished. It is finished.

The Blatant Rejection Of God

I've come recently to a conclusion, based on my own testimony and experience, along with observation, and it's this: We, as Christians, reject God at every chance we get and justify it without any hesitation.

Now, that might not seem like news to you, but it is to me... At least on the level I'm understanding it now. Conversely, this might make you angry because you try very hard to obey God or consider yourself a person of great faith. But, that's just the point. This goes deep and is blatant. It's true for the whole spectrum of Believers, from venerable John McArthur to the guy who just got saved in jail yesterday. The ways in which our rejection of God expresses itself are innumerable; through doctrine, through relationships, through real-time choices, it's a constant swirl of rebellion and rejection of the God we claim to love and trust.

We pat ourselves on the back for the miniscule obedience and trust we muster and have absolutely no problem dismissing the mountains of rejection and rebellion we evidence with each day that passes.
